comments for Backrooms Fishing
sort: go backIncredibly interesting idea, lowkey terrible execution. The game design feels half assed rather than built around the idea it seems very arbitrary and honestly I wouldn't be surprised if partially ai-made. Trying to elaborate more on it, some gameplay features seem to exist just for the sake of it rather than to provide a properly curated and specific gameplay experience
"almond water" girl the almond scent is cyanide
I quit the game as soon as Journal 31 asked me to force add it to my Steam wishlist.
its nice demo i guess, hope future areas add something new to the game though atleast and change the journal 31 wishlist to like you have finished the demo now you can go wishlist it or something.
Referring to the dev's response to a comment made by AniPad: The developer did not deny the accusations that this game was made by (or at least assisted by) AI. We know he is using AI, we just can't prove it yet...
The UI is pretty, smooth, and easy to digest. I wish the the fish notification bar scrolled down from the top instead of bottom up. Also I wish that it was clearer how much Almond water you got from fishing. Other than that, the game was extremely linear and I never really felt in control of what to do next. None of the upgrades made a substantial difference. The game played more like a movie. I didnt get to the end like other players, but I think it's more of the same.
developer response: I'm glad you like the UI, I'm introducing a lot more choices and asymmetric system with the next demo so look forward to it!
Just as a heads up, there are no legendary fish in this demo. Also, almond water is such a bizarre bit of backrooms lore to me. The original story was clearly saying the place smelled like cyanide.
I'm 95% certain this game is generated at least partially by AI, at minimum the text throughout the game. "I started naming corners. The long window became “Morning Window,” even though no window showed anything but more pools. The drain near the deep end became “The Listener” because it seemed to breathe with me. Pretending I could read the room made it easier to stay." What? This doesn't make any sense? The icons don't really match (the "Puddle Puppeteer" for some reason is marked with a pen?) and the mechanics are incredibly basic but also clunky. For me, the thing that gives it away is interpreting the poolrooms smelling like cyanide as "almond water". I can't imagine a human making that mistake. If you used AI, just disclose that you did, otherwise it's super manipulative to put out a game made with AI, not list it, and make a step required wishlisting the game on Steam.
developer response: Hi, Almond Water is extremely common in Backrooms lore and also present in other games

if you google you will also see a lot more results, it's most definitely not an AI mistake :P
dude is becoming part of pool
this game is fun but the pain in my fingers isn't
developer response: I promise it's fixed in the newer version, thanks for playing!
this is very high quality! insanely good ui that you immediately understand but it feels more of a thing i just click on every once and a while without thinking. and it runs HORRIBLY! some settings for turning off some resource intensive effects, or whatever makes my computer fans scream! its a good concept though
developer response: I will add an option to turn off resource intensive effects
so i think i just beat the demo?? im on entry 31 the "wishlist on steam". The game was pretty fun, perfect for doing while watching a yt vid or eating. I cant even wish list on steam because clicking it is not taking me to steam website, so idk.
developer response: https://store.steampowered.com/app/3485830/Backrooms_Fishing you can find the game here on steam, happy to hear you had fun!
I want the completionist achievement but the game wont let me finish nr 31 entry :( 2/5
developer response: and you will have it! I fixed quest 31 so it can be completed, thanks for playing!
I had a lot of fun playing this and added it to my wishlist!
i got the completionist achievement, just pressed the wishlist button that's not in the quest
I only just started, but it looks like it was generated by Websim or some other AI. The UI at least, although the gameplay also feels like something it would make. That being said, it's certainly the one of the better AI generated idle games I've seen. If it's not AI, I recommend making your UI more unique. Also the story doesn't make much sense so far, but it is the backrooms so I don't know what I expected there.
Small bug/oversight: Using Multi-catch as part of your streak of 3 rare+ fish for the Lucky Streak achievement doesn't count; it seems to be required to be 3 actual rolls in a row.
Regarding the game itself: for a game that's extremely simple in terms of gameplay like this, I think it's going to be important to double down on mood building. Play a sound effect of the lights humming at the same time a journal mentioning the lights humming is unlocked. Play weird, distorted clunk sounds of doors opening in the distance. Maybe an inhale/exhale sound effect when you hold still/stop holding still. Some background effects even, like heightening bloom or distortion when moving to new zones for a bit. Just things like that to drive immersion, it doesn't have to be all or even any of those things, but it definitely needs something to make it stand out as an immersive, flowing experience with gameplay this simple. (which is NOT inherently a bad thing btw)
developer response: I'm working on a big content update for the next demo, I'll keep your report in mind as well, thanks for playing!
Its a pretty slow game with an ok story, but its an idle game that requires you to actively hold a button the entire time to make progress despite there being nothing interesting to do while holding said button.
Also quest 31 forces you to go wishlist the game on steam, so i didint play past that. But right now it overall just feels a bit lacking in content.
developer response: I'm hard at work on adding content and improving the game, especially when it comes to the hold still mechanic which is gone and replaced in the newer versions. Thanks for playing!
How do you hold still on mobile
developer response: sorry, the game isn't really meant to be played on mobile

It seems that Journal 31 is the end of the demo. Not even clicking the button to wishlist the game will let you go past it.
I feel like this should be communicated better, because without that context it just seems like the game is forcing you to do this in order to continue.
