comments for CLOWN HOLE: Going Deeper
sort: go backGood job, great game
developer response: Appreciate your feedback, and thanks for your kind comment about the art :D! Do you think a prestige-like system would fit with the current setup of the game? I would definitely want something like that, but I'd also be concerned that we'd need way more to do in each level, or make way more levels, to make it feel worthwhile. Curious about your thoughts!
All the bosses are great with their fun little patterns. I don't think the spider one is that bad, but I could see people getting surprised by it taking out precious buildings. Based on its difficulty, I think it'd be better as a 4th boss or have the jump speed reduced a little. The final boss also doesn't need to be beaten. The enemies it spawns drops so much blue ore that you can just quit about half way in. I believe you should either have these enemies no drop ore or have the boss stages require the boss to be beaten as they can also be cheesed by harvested egg clown spawns.
Balance:
The early game to each round is somewhat tedious. Since none of the upgrades speeds this up, your best bet at not dying of boredom repeating a stage a few times for egg clowns is using an auto-clicker. I think having some upgrades that benefit early game such as starting with X miners or increasing miner's/click's base power without buildings would be beneficial.
On the topic of egg clowns, it's not very intuitive to go for them. It's basically luck whether you happen to catch one on your first run and you're forced to repeat each run to get the ones you missed. On later stages, it can be especially worse due to the large maps and multiple light levels. You have a short period to find and memorize the Egg Clown location and hope you place down one of your limited lamps in the right spot next run.
I believe it's highly necessary to give Egg Clowns a unique indicator in the Dark (maybe a blue grin or a egg clown grin instead). Either that or give bigger stages more base lamps (or have that be an upgrade).
Bugs:
Sometimes Egg Clowns just run away despite using a lamp to create dim light. There's one pesky Egg Clown I could never kill in 3-1 since it consistently always runs away no matter what I do. If this is intentional, maybe it should be a unique egg clown enemy type. It seems to also happen when you catch an Egg Clown on the edge of a Lamp Post as well.
Sometimes the upgrade overlay will get stuck on a single upgrade and won't show you the info for the other upgrades. I don't know what causes this but it happened to me 3 times across my playthrough.
On the topic of prestige systems, I'm not sure it would benefit the game at its current state as you already usually have to repeat each stage twice or three times to get all the egg clowns. If egg clowns can be gotten more consistently without memorization, it could be better since you would only need to run each stage once.
developer response: this is fantastic feedback, thank you so much! I totally agree with giving the egg clowns more of an indicator of where they are on the map, and a different glimmer in the dark is a great idea. At the moment, they all have a unique laugh when you mouse over them in the dark, but I think it is too subtle, and we could do with something extra. thanks again, it means a lot!

camera movement as well. no reason you can't just left cilck and drag.
but above all.. i don't like that clowns destroy things. which take resources away from you that you can't get back. don't like that one bit. the solution to this is to simply have the corpse/ruin of what they killed still there and clicking it, for free, brings it back. but can't be done until all clowns are dead or something. simple solution. makes the game far more enjoyable.
developer response: Thanks for your feedback! Very helpful for us to get a different perspective on those systems ^^
