description

"Feed me" is the current title of a prototype about feeding and growing a catfish.

I'm basically just looking for feedback as I had no luck on itch.io.

Controls:

Mouse -> Cursor position dictates where the Catfish is moving towards, click to buy upgrades, click and hold to drag the upgrade menu, mouse wheel to zoom in and out while the upgrade menu is open
Fullscreen is recommended

Current features:

  • Eat food and grow
  • Use food to upgrade your catfish
  • 59 total upgrades, 56 are implemented at the moment
  • Zoom in/out and move the upgrade menu using your mouse
  • A few pitched down voice lines, meant to sound creepy (I hope it works)
  • Some upgrades feature some artwork, others are blank
  • Gain XP when eating
  • After reaching level 1, you can click to Dash (depends on your speed)
  • Enemies will spawn, dodge them if you can
  • Once a certain upgrade has been bought and your catfish is big enough, you can eat enemies
  • A second currency: money (unlocked after getting a certain food upgrade)
  • Money can be used for additional upgrades and buying food (100$ -> 200 food)
  • Handdrawn and "obtained" assets

If you find any more features I forgot to mention, let me know.

I played till endgame and now hold a few thoughts. A lot of words.
Thoughts:
- Really like these silly looking upgrade tree games
- Was not expecting the voice lines, a little spooked at first (had something playing in the background) but after hearing the catfish saying yummy or delicious, I started to imagine Roadhog saying these lines.
- Does growing a large enough size result in an end/ending?
- Is that fast enemy a squid or a missile?
- A little unfinished but has functionality.
- I think [Food Stamps 1/2] is working but I can't really tell since I'm mostly maxed out

General Feedback:
- For my entire playthrough of the game, I notice that there was a bar under the fish but did not know what it did until I read the description (Dash Feature).
- The lack of ambience/music made the game feel a bit boring
- Around a certain size some enemies cannot be eaten even after getting the [The hunt is on] upgrade
- Lack of distinction in upgrade tree made it hard to know what was maxed or what is being purchase
- Gets a bit repetitive around mid-late game.
- UI in upgrade tree is a bit weird but not really an issue
- Is there a purpose behind getting EXP?

Idea Dump (I really like bouncing off ideas, Apologies if this crosses a line):
General
- Ambience/Music| Maybe SFX variations for eating and a simple background soundtrack
- Upgrade tree UI| "New Round" and "$100 > 200 Food" with "Food: #" and "Money: #" are in good spots. Maybe move "Center Grid" and "Preview Grid" to be on sides of "New Round" so it is less spread out. Or maybe move "Center Grid" to be below "Preview Grid" instead
- Dash| Have a way to indicate the dash feature to the player not only in description but also in-game.

More function for Dashing/Enemy Events/Movement and Health Upgrades
- Fishing Hooks| "enemies" that occurs after zooming out X amount of time. They come with a warning? before they sink down then after a few second they come back up. If you hit the fishing hook, you either take a chunk of damage or immediately caught resulting in end of the round.
- Squid| "enemy" that will slowly chase after the player depend on the their size before losing interest.
- Jellyfish| "enemy" that will just exist. Maybe they bob up and down or bob upwards. Could be more variation for food when [The hunt is on]. Every few seconds, when the player is near they'll emit shocks. If you hit the jellyfish, you take damage and will either lose dash temporarily or will be unable to move for a few seconds
- Pufferfish| "enemy" that enters without warning, looks like a normal fish but when eaten the player takes poison damage (small chunks?) over time for a few seconds

Closing Words:
Really like the silly nature of this game, it may lack some things but I can see the general direction of how this game will grow. I don't think I agree with the "hours" tag since it took me about ~1.5 hours to mostly complete the upgrade tree. But overall, I hope this essay of a post help with any future developments. Thank You for Reading, I'm going to head over and play your other two games. Cheers! (●U●)> ♡

developer response: Hey there, first off, thank you for your thorough feedback! I really like reading comments like these as there is a lot to take from them.
The game, as you've noticed, isn't finished yet, I just released it as a prototype and didn't know where to go from there, but after receiving a lot of feedback on here, I've decided to continue this project in the future.
I'm open to all kinds of ideas, so you don't have to worry about dumping your suggestions here :D
I've added all of your notes to my to-do list and again, I want to thank you for helping with this
Glad you enjoyed it and I hope you'll have fun with the other two :)
Have a good day and stay healthy!

Edit: to your questions at the top:
Growing large enough won't result in an ending as of yet, but I have plans for a new prestige layer once you're big enough
The small, fast enemy is a 9mm bullet. The reason for that is that a catfish has been shot at by police 3 times back in June 2025. This game and my previous project "Catfish Clicker" are both based on this

I can tell it's not mobile friendly

i really like this! I really hope you keep working on it and adding more interesting systems.
Personally, I'd love it if the game can scale infinitely even if it has a defined ending point - i think that's something a lot of incrementals lack nowadays. Let me raise the upgrade caps until the numbers quite literally break my PC. That's my favorite kind of incremental.

developer response: Hey there, thank you for your kind words :)
I won't continue this project in the near future, but I'll definitely work on it again some time this year, I hope

how to get 1b food?

developer response: Hey there, if you're referring to the Ascension upgrades, their cost is just a placeholder, as they haven't been implemented yet. You're not supposed to get them yet and they'll be a lot cheaper when I get around to adding them.

Feedback:
This is a good idea for a game! Good concept and fun.
Things I liked:
* Growing the catfish felt good
* Eventually being able to eat even the bullets was fun
* The early progression was solid up until the first few money upgrades

Things I didn't like:
* The UI was off-screen until I zoomed out my browser to 80%
* As others have mentioned, late-game progression feels grindy without payoff
* It's ok to have features you want to implement, but it's a bit awkward to have upgrades in the middle of the grid that are unobtainable
* The largest enemy catfish seems to be inedible regardless of my size

Overall, there is definitely something here and I wish you luck!

developer response: Hey there, thanks for all the feedback!
I've definitely made some poor decisions uploading the game in this state, but I honestly was too lazy and just wanted to get some feedback :D
It really helps getting suggestions like these :)
I've put all of them on my list, thank you!

This is fun. The feel of it is pretty good though the way things scale could be tweaked a little. It feels like getting the money upgrades once they are 1k+ the price is a little steep. I'd love some prestige layers and I'm excited to see what you will add to the game as you continue to develop it!

developer response: Hey there, thanks for the feedback!
Yeah, I had some trouble balancing all of the upgrades, especially the later ones. Should I get back to working on this project, I'll make sure to rework some of those upgrades (e.g. Carnivorous as its effect isn't all that great for the price).
As for prestige layers: I have an idea for the first prestige layer, though I don't really know where to go from there, so I'm open for ideas :D

fun game, though i feel like it gets a little boring later on. maybe add some upgrades to spawn more food or spawn food more often?

developer response: Hey there, great suggestion, I already had that one on my list :D
It's already been integrated in the grid, though the effect hasn't been implemented yet

Really love the gimmick of this game, visuals make me feel like I'm in 2009, but I did not expect to see half of what's happening.

Nice game, more fun that fent.

developer response: Hey there, I'm glad you enjoyed it :)

catfish is neat. Some of the fish stay red, mostly the tiny ones. Also, what does omnivore do?

developer response: Hey there, eating is kinda bugged at the moment, I seem to not have tested it properly
Omnivore enables you to eat non-organic enemies (at the moment there are only bullets that are flagged as non-organic enemies). Later levels increase XP gained when eating an enemy and additionally, you get money when eating non-organic enemies.
I hope this helps :)

I'm not going to mention all the assets you should add, but you can
* make the hover effect more visible, or just add tooltips to every button
* add placeholder artwork, blank squares look like they do nothing
* mark the maxed upgrades
* add help text e.g. the stamina bar should say DASH when filled
* hide the timer if/when irrelevant
* add keyboard control?
* and add in rare voice lines that are pitched up instead.

developer response: Hey there, thank you so much for your suggestions! I put all of them on my list, though I can't say for sure when I'll continue this project. I was actually about to scrap this game before I uploaded it to galaxy, since I didn't receive any feedback on itch.
But after reading all of the messages here, I now know that the game has potential and I'll gladly continue when I find the time :)
