I'm enjoying it quite a bit so far! A few things I have to note -- more than I thought I would, so, uh, beware? This is my first comment on the site, because I think it's promising enough to deserve it, just, uh, yeah. It's a lot. Hyperfixation go!

The Bugbear Elite does not drop poison ingredients on their rare drop. It says 'rare drop', like normal, but the number of ingredients, and thus poison resistance, does not go up.

With regards to the square specifically, it's significantly slower to level them than it is to level, say, the farmer, due to how much time it takes for combat to happen. ...But I see that you already responded to that for somebody else, so I'll leave that alone.

For the squire, I'd suggest having it set up so that auto-spin slash will never go off if it will reduce the stamina below what's needed for 'brace for impact'.

It's sometimes hard to tell what certain abilities mean. For example, there's a scholar ability that gives you bonus pages -- but I didn't realize that the bonus pages were based off of 'pages done normally', nor that it could work on two researches at once. I assumed it based itself off of level, and could only apply to one.

I'd suggest having clues or hints placed around to let the player know what to do next -- I.E., 'maybe you should have 50 Might and 50 Toughness before starting to fight the goblins'. Things like that. Having that for some of the achievements would also be nice, but are very much unnecessary.

It's not always clear what perks require what. If you could make the lines on the perk screen into arrows, pointing at what it grants access to, that would be an easy, visual way to demonstrate the flow of perks.

After a certain point, with the scholar, it becomes more efficient to start a life as them, quickly get all of the perks, use 'get more pages' once, and then restart the life. You can do all of that in under the two minutes it takes to recharge that skill. Please, dear god, for all that is holy, do not make the skill need recharging before you use it, and instead maybe cut what it gives in half but double the rate you can use it.

I can't speak for others, but I think that the game could genuinely use story segments for every new item you buy and perk you obtain, as well as for certain milestones, once you're past the early game for each lifestyle. I feel like it would fit this game very well, and would make me more invested in obtaining new traits, especially if each unobtained item and perk has a little mark next to it to indicate 'new content'. It'd be a small but relatively cheap way to add investment.

A really personal thing -- if you could choose gender for the main character and have different dialogue based on that that'd be great, but that's really just a 'my personal preference' thing. I like playing as girls, and almost every game ever defaults to you playing a guy.

Noting how some of the mechanics work, mathematically, in common language, could be quite useful. For example, once I realized that five of a reincarnation stat doubled its boons, that's what I was starting to focus on. Obtain five if possible, then restart.

You should probably rename 'hunger' to 'fullness' or 'satiatity' or something. Having a skill that says 'you get bonuses for how full your hunger meter is' made me think that it meant the hungrier you were, the greater the boost.

Overall, it's very promising! I love games like this, where you can get states that boost you in other lives. Looking forward to more!

developer response: Wow thanks so much for the write up! I'm so glad you're enjoying the game. I'm honored to be your first comment too! :D I'll try my best to respond to each of your points. Please note that I am heavily into the development of the next patch, so some of the notes here should already be taken care of.

- You're right about the Bugbear Elite; that is a bug. Thanks for pointing it out!
- Yeah, the Squire is a bit too slow - especially in the early game and end game. I've taken measures to improve this in the next patch.
- This is a good idea, but I don't want to make automation too "perfect" if that makes sense. "Autoskill priority" could be a future perk upgrade though!
- Epiphany had a really vague tooltip, this has been improved in the new patch coming.
- I'll continue to improve the hints and clues given on both how to unlock things and general suggestions as well - totally fair.
- Perks got quite an overhaul in the patch I am working on, which included some additional highlighting of lines. Should hopefully help.
- In general, Researcher really, really needed a tuning pass. It works very differently in the new patch I am working on - these changes should resolve this.
- I'm happy to see that someone wants more story! I'll keep that in mind as I develop future content. Every item might be a bit much, but still I will keep it in mind. :)
- I specifically left the player character genderless so that anyone playing can see themselves in the player's shoes. :) I will specifically say though that the player character is not considered a guy by default.
- This is something that may be helpful to add into the info pages.
- Yeah the hunger bar is a bit odd in that a higher bar means you are less hungry, and being less hungry is better haha.

Again I really appreciate the write up. I'd highly encourage you to check out the official HFI discord or my latest devlog on itch.io for more information on the new patch. The next patch is huge and it's coming along nicely.

I have been plying this game for a week or so now. I know its just a demo at this point but the max lvl for the characters is much higher then the total number of perks we can currently get. Is there going to be more perks to get or the ability to upgrade the current ones?

developer response: Yes! More perks are coming in the next demo update.

Really great game! I enjoyed playing it for the past week. Although it's just a demo, I think it has great potential. I have a few suggestions tho. First, it would be nice to have a button that can buy all the perks, especially later on in the game. Or a preset for perks so that for every rebirth the game can auto-assign those perk points. Second, there is a little bug for freezing the "rebirth point". I found it out in the very end of the demo. When calculating the amount of might/hardness/wisdom gained from rebirth, it seems like you add the XP (or something else I can't really tell) first, check for if the progress bar reached 100%, then subtract the excess if the amount exceeded the maximum. This caused me to have "-0.12% until next rebirth point" once, which is quite funny but no big deal. Also, maybe adding a feature for squire to increase attack speed (slightly, like 2x) would balance it out a bit from the other two, so that it can progress faster.
By the way, are you planning to make a mac version too? I'm not on windows system so I can't download it from itch, and if I loose the save on web I'll loose everything. But if you're not planning to, I'll try my best to keep my progress from being wiped on web.
Anyways, I look forward to future updates!

developer response: Thank you!

I'm happy to say that I am working on a solution for this particular issue with perks. Assigning perks every rebirth can get tedious and it'll only get worse as the game gets bigger, so I'm working on a system for this. :)

What is happening here is you are hitting the cap for "rebirth stat XP". The progress bar looks messy though and isn't properly handled, so I will look into fixing that.

Although I don't have any plans for it in the immediate future, attack speed is something I am able to tweak on the Squire. :)

You know, I've been getting this question a lot about MacOS. I have two obstacles right now. First is that I don't own a Mac, so I can't test a Mac build of HFI. I do have the capability to create a Mac build though. Second is time - if I support a Mac build that adds a lot of additional testing to my plate, and as a solo developer my time is really at a premium.

That being said, I won't promise anything right now but I'll continue to look into the possibilities of long-term support for a Mac download. I think what it's going to come down to is how stable is a Mac version right out the gate, and how much additional work and maintenance would it be to keep that platform going.

So uh

developer response: Apologies that the demo ends abruptly, but that is the last enemy for the Squire. :) When I roll out the updated demo, it'll have a much more definitive end.

Great game, loved all of it. I've spent the last two days hypergrinding this game and after unlocking everything (except the secret achievement Number go up, please help), I can say this game is absolutely fantastic. Great use of idle and RPG mechanics, blended into a beautiful experience. Wish there was more but alas a demo is a demo, but it's been instantly wishlisted on Steam!

My only real criticisms are with the Squire, as I do feel like this class is a lot more grindy than the other two classes (yet, to be fair, it's also the class I find more interesting). For example, there is no way to boost his xp gain which kinda sucks since I'm trying to get the max 183 stats. Also felt that some upgrades were meaningless, such as defense, since it was underwhelming late game. Having 100k defense against an attack that deals 100M is... nothing.

developer response: Thank you so much!

For Number Go Up - my hint is that it is obtained somewhere on the info screen, maybe somewhere where you can see a number literally go up?

For Squire - yes it suffers the most from end of content as that is where is gets most of its XP scaling from. More content will help with this! Also I completely hear you about Defense, I have actually already redesigned it in my local build, so expect something more beneficial from the stat long term. :) (And don't worry Thorns will still be good)

Also just to reiterate, more content is coming to the demo! It will be updated on all platforms when it is ready.

Interesting start, looking forward to more. Minor suggestion but I would like to see shop items highlighted when you can afford them. Maybe dim the Buy button if you don't have enough gold.

developer response: Ooh I like this idea - I'll put it in my notes.

When the game first loads, the scaling is wrong. Click "expand" at the bottom left, then "shrink." If you can't click the "nice" button, click the game to make sure it's in focus and then hit "enter."

So.. I played bit enough to say something I think; perma upgrades motivates to try again, no restriction for rebirth is accessible, job and item(books, for now) unlocks for each class's progress is interesting. got hooked.

developer response: Thank you! Glad you had fun.

I like it! I played it on itch awhile ago back when you had that game-breaking offline time bug, but with that fixed this is a much more interesting game. I wish there was more than the demo, because this scratches a number of small itches I have in just the right way. Do you have an ETA on a full release?

developer response: No ETA on a release, but the demo content is not over! There will be a substantial update to the demo coming before an Early Access release on Steam. :)
