Don't panic! The system is crashing, but your Nanobits may survive the reboot.

Use the sidebar to buy upgrades. Change the difficulty anytime in the settings.

Let's go from 1 bit to Octal Prism?

I created this prototype for the New Year's Incremental Game Jam 2026, inspired by the theme "Inception", and updated the demo for the Patch Notes Game Jam with the theme "Out of Time".

It’s a journey through the "beginnings" of coding—starting with binary and moving through symbols, colors, and octal. The UI isn't quite finished yet (especially for mobile), and there might be a few localization bugs.

I’m definitely willing to keep working on this if people enjoy the concept. Let me know what you think—feedback is always welcome!

Luminous hugs from Colatina, Brasil!

PS: if anyone wants to support me and Start From 0 to grow, there is a "symbolic" bundle, any value is welcome :)

Patch 1.1+

  • New Feature: Difficulty Settings – Choosing Medium or Hard difficulty will now result in a % loss of Nanobits upon reset.

  • New Upgrade: Added an upgrade to reduce the percentage of Nanobits lost on reset.

  • Audio: Added new background music during gameplay.

  • Improvements: Enhanced the Menu UI.

A huge thank you to everyone who commented after the last patch! Your feedback inspired the introduction of Nanobit loss and Difficulty Settings.

Patch 1.1

  • New Feature: System Integrity – The system is failing, and you are running "Out of Time" (This is the Patch Notes Game Jam theme!).

  • New Upgrades:

    • Increase your System Integrity to stay in the game longer.
    • Speed up color insertion on the Painting Canvas. (This was a community request—you guys were totally right, it needed a boost!)
  • New Visuals: Added Crash and Reboot screens to the visual narrative.

  • Improvements: Enhanced the UI for mobile users (Still fine-tuning).

Devlog

Well, well, well... here we go again!

Start From 0 took 9th place in its first game jam, and now I’m uploading its first patch and submitting it to the Patch Notes Game Jam!

The first version of SF0 has over 2k plays and amazing comments here on itch.io—and especially on galaxy.click. :) I’m so thankful for that!

It would be nice if in settings we could toggle the big screen that appears upon running out of system integrity to not appear

I think this game is pretty fun but it keeps randomly freezing up. It always comes back after like 5 seconds but it's just kinda weird

developer response: Hi! Thanks for playing and commenting! The crashes and reboots are actually part of the game’s core mechanics. You can purchase an upgrade to extend the time before the system reboots. :)

On Easy Mode, you don’t lose any nanobits upon resetting. On Medium, you lose 50%, and on Hard, you lose even more. However, there is an upgrade available to reduce the number of nanobits lost during a reboot. :)

This may not be a particularly fun game, but its presentation is really impressive and creative. I like this game. However, it still needs more balance and entertainment value, such as unlocking or gaining unique bonuses at the start of each era, instead of just the three initial upgrades.

developer response: thank you so much for your comment! i feel the game isn't much about challenge but more about contemplating and visual satisfaction and I agree with you about adding more balance and entertainment value ^.^ luminous hugs from Brasil!

This game was simple but fun, it would be awesome if it kept going, like having a starting from 1, 2, 3 etc...
having more upgrades like an auto booster that gives a little boost or something

developer response: thank you so much! I'll be glad to be able to continue it ^.^ the auto booster upgrade is indeed a must have ^.^

If anyone is wondering, zhiomn used Gemini specifically for what was made using artificial intelligence

developer response: Gemini was used for help with code and localization :)

sorry but I really don't get the 'system integrity' mechanic. I understand that now the system crashes every so often and you can buy an upgrade to crash less often. But, the system crashes don't really seem to do anything besides pop up a screen that you have to click through- I didn't see myself losing progress or upgrades.

developer response: thank you from Brasil! you are right, the crash do not make the player lose anything (but time) yet, I'll work more on it after the Patch 1.1 jam!
